to live a meaningful life everyday; to continually pursue my predetermined worthwhile goals. -my view of life.

could i put myself in the life-threatening working environment? could i sacrifice my life for the benefits of others? some people may laugh at my crazy question. to me, that is a serious question i have come a long way to find my answer. “i am not sure whether it is worth to answer”; “what is the true meaning of that question?”

when i was a young child, i watched a soap opera that was about court. i was deeply impressed by the judge’s calmness and the lawyer’s eloquence and resource that were showed in this opera. from then on, i hoped to study law some day. fortunately, i performed well in entrance examination and got enrolled into xx university. then i chose law as my major without hesitation. at university, i studied hard and got gpa 3.4. what’s more, i broadly read all kinds of books, including philosophy, history etc. my teachers’ instruction strengthened my understanding of law and makes me understand the significance of law to a country. from my studies, i had a lot of fun and got more interested in law. moreover, i actively participated in practice in holidays from common company to law firm and tried to apply the theory i had learned into practice.

this summer, i had my internship in counselor department in xxx group co ltd which was involved in a business contract dispute, which was submitted to china international economic and trade arbitration commission for arbitration. as a representative of the requested applicant, i took part in the evidence collection in the early arbitration stage and clearly explained why the 5% balance of goods was not paid on time. after knowing the whole case, i visited my teacher, an arbitration law professor, and listened to her opinions. realizing the counterpart didn’t completely implement their contract duty, i gave reasons as follows: first, the counterpart company didn’t mention bearing issue, which caused that the delivered machines couldn’t be put into the plant because of the disqualification of workshop. thus overhaul was necessary, which delayed production and resulted loss. based on these reasons, the counterpart didn’t completely carry out its duty, so our party did not pay the balance on time. during this time, i found out the evidence and pictures that attested counterpart did not give reasonable suggestion and service, and made a statement in the court. finally, the arbitration turned out that counterpart compensated our loss, in which the arbiters invoked the reasons that i stated. they had a panel made up of 3 lawyers and 5 company representatives as agents while we just had 3 persons—two lawyers and me. under such condition, i was able to cooperate with them and clearly stated my opinions without any nervousness, which got their respect. this matter greatly inspired my enthusiasm on study.

in addition, i took part in the contact draft in several companies. in the process, when i met a lot of problems, i often turned to my teachers for help, which made good impression on them. as i cherished each practice, i studied my specialty and english hard. with effective study method and diligence, i did well both in english and law, which helped me a lot to get scholarship every year. on the other hand, my practice inspired me to study. in practice, i exercised my legal knowledge. i also realize the big gap between theory and its application—sometimes i have master the rules but i didn’t know how to use it in actual case. my practice experiences have not only strengthened what i learned but have supplied new knowledge for me, which is good for my future study and career.

in my study and practice, i admired outstanding lawyers’ eloquence and jumping thinking more and more. however, in china, most of lawyers come from theory study and those who can perform well in practice are insufficient. moreover, after the china’s entrance to wto, there are a lot of problems with chinese law. i think, my internship experience is not enough. in practice, i could combine substantive law with procedural law to analyze case, but i still feel my theoretical foundation is not solid enough. what’s more, comparably speaking, the chances that i have to initiatively study and practice are not a lot. thereby, i am eager to study further abroad to know more about foreign law, thoughts and lawyer career so that i am able to stand out in fierce competition.

dear x,

it is my conviction that the meaning of life does not dwell in the lengthof time that one can live or the material abundance that one can acquire, but inthe richness and the wonderfulness of life itself. with the increase of my age, many things in my life have changed. but one thing remains constant, that is, iwill consistently insist on doing what i like to do and hope that my endeavorscan be valuable to the life of others. i see this as the only way whereby i canrealize the value of my life.

my undergraduate study focused on economics and i achieved remarkablescholastic performance in this field. my gpa is 3.44 (my gre score is 20xx andtoefl---- ). for four consecutive years of my undergraduate study, i receivedscholarships for my distinguished academic performance. due to my equallyprominent performance in extracurricular activities i was conferred on theoutstanding student in campus activities. however, honestly speaking, my realinterest lies not in economics, but in education. ever since i was a primaryschool student, i had cherished a strong desire for a teaching careerexemplified by my teachers. in the actual teaching career that i embarked onupon my graduating from university, i have become increasingly aware that theexisting educational conditions in china are far from satisfactory. the backwardteaching methodology and the prevailing pedagogical ideology have renderedchinese education out of place with the modern international development ineducation. on the macro level, the current education theory and practice inchina lag significantly behind advanced countries in the west. for instance, though education via the internet has achieved considerable development in pasttwo years, in practical operation such education has more often than notdeteriorated into an extended form of the conventional examination-orientededucation instead of a really interactive process. in my personal experience, despite the fact that some of the problems that i have encountered in myteaching career can be solved by consulting relevant technical literature, ihave found that the more serious flaws inherent in china's current educationalsystem cannot be worked out easily. under such circumstances, an advancedprogram in education becomes necessary.

in this age of information, traditional education, both in its ideology andmethodology, has met unprecedented challenge like many other aspects of humanexistence. meanwhile, the pursuit for higher levels of educational developmentand of the quality of life has largely transformed the educational valueorientation of the general public. the educational model that is centered aroundthe cognitive and intellectual instruction has been seriously questioned.greater attention has been devoted to the cultivation of well-developedpersonality and to the ontological status of the individual in education. suchissues as the internal studies of education science, scientific decision-makingin education, and meta-education have also been increasingly emphasized upon.there have also been innovations in educational research methodology. thetendency has been to combine modern technology with humanistic researchcategories and with naturalistic research categories, and to organicallyintegrate qualitative descriptions with quantitative descriptions. it is alsoimportant to carry out educational experimentations in which educationalpredictions are complemented by educational feedbacks. both the complexity ofeducation and the complexity of human individuals have made the comprehensiveapplication of diverse educational approaches necessary. those new horizons arewhat fascinate me.

in view of the following qualifications that i have acquired, i believethat i will acquit myself satisfactorily in the prospective ph.d. program ineducation that i am currently endeavoring to apply for. first and foremost, asis often claimed, one's interest is one's best director. i believe that i willdo well what i am really interested in doing. secondly, though i majored ineconomics as an undergraduate, my trainings during that stage helped developeffective modes of thinking and research approaches. in addition, iconscientiously self-studied many works related to education, including adevelopmental history of educational science in the west, which enabled me toconstruct a solid groundwork for more advanced studies in this field. next, itcan be safely asserted that education and economics are not entirely separated.for example, it is necessary to apply many statistical methods in educationalpsychology and my academic record indicates that statistics is the subject thati am most good at. last but not the least, my current teaching career and myteaching experience will play a positive role in facilitating my target degreeprogram.

the reason why i apply for the university of ------------ is that it is thefirst state university with a time-honored history. the school of education inthis university is quite prominent among its counterparts in the field. i amparticularly attracted by the school's powerful pedagogical resource, vibrantintellectual atmosphere and a comprehensive curriculum. i plan to apply for adegree program in instructional technology or educational psychology, both ofwhich enjoy unparalleled academic reputation in the world. my application forinstructional technology is motivated by my strong interest in the applicationof modern science and technology, especially the information technologyrepresented by the internet, in the field of education and in the nature of aseries of revolutionary changes resulting thereof. instructional technology is anew discipline that has emerged as a result of the rapid development of moderncommunication technology since the late 20th century. it has tremendouspotential for development and commercial application. as for my motive inselecting educational psychology as another possible area of specialization inmy degree program, it is my long-cherished interest that primarily counts. onthe other hand, all the accomplished educators since the 1960's have beenwell-versed in psychology. almost every important new educational theory isderived psychological findings in one way or another so that educationalpsychology has subsequently developed into a fundamental subject for the scienceof education. the tendency in the 21st century is to emphasize on the microresearch of educational activities and against this backdrop educationalpsychology will be attached greater importance. in instructional technology, iwould like to focus on the following studies: how to improve educationalefficiency by applying research results from natural sciences and engineeringtechnology; how to explore the combination and coordination of pedagogicalcontents and to improve teaching methodology by exploiting the theoreticalfindings from psychology and educational science concerning the process ofteaching and learning. in educational psychology, i will concentrate on appliedcognition and development, gifted and creative education, genetics and childrendevelopment, personality structure and individual differences and other relatedsubjects.

for me, to shift from economics to education and to pursue an advanceddegree in the united states is not so much a challenge as an opportunity. atpresent, major reforms are being introduced into virtually every importantaspect of chinese society. the field of education especially calls forcomprehensive reforms. the united states occupies an absolutely leading positionin the present-day world in education. it is my conviction that, in the unitedstates, advanced educational theories, technologies and information willfacilitate me immensely in the achievement of remarkable academic progress, fulfilling my aspiration to become an accomplished professional in the field ofeducation. this will not only bring my patriotic fervor into reality but alsomake my life more meaningful and rewarding.

yours sincerely,

i live in pakistan-a country destroying itself with bombs, guns and governments' blabber to find justifications for what it is going through;a country where a former president is murdered in public, where the nation's constitution and parliament are suspended at the same time, and where the voice of a common man is unheard.

since the last few years, i had aspired to become a doctor.the idea of "scalpels," "opened chests" and "sutures" had always intrigued me.and then it happened!the recent unprecedented events in my country wiped off the dust of disillusionment from my eyes;i lost my will to become a doctor.however, the turmoil in the country led me towards newspapers and news channels, and hence politics.

as i involved myself into politics,i realized that it is all-embracive-wielding its way over social and economic life-it is the omnipotent of pakistan.it can mobilize public opinion, gear up propaganda machinery, make or repeal laws and what not.backed up by public opinion, supported by the majority of the legislators, armed with the means to keep the people in a state of ignorance, political power crosses the limits of dictatorial powers.political power, like the most powerful intoxicant, makes the persons in power to forget social ethics, political morality and obligations.

most of the learned youth in this country consider politics to be "a refuge for the scoundrels" and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at the deceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty game.all these political parties are votaries of democracy, but the way they conduct themselves inside their own parties is nothing but senseless authoritarianism.therefore a very few students choose to pursue politics as a profession, but what they don't realize is that if we don't take a stand the system can never be changed.thus,i want to study politics so i can come back to my country and contribute what little i can do for my homeland and its people.if i can inspire even a single person,it would be worth it.the world today is growing global.we are now not only to think of our own nation but as and when we think of it,we have to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,i chose politics with international relations as one of my courses.

studying in uk will breed a sense of individuality and self reliance.i would be able to interact with people from everywhere and get to know about their culture.this would not only open new horizons for me,but would also clear some preconceived notions one has about the other.i have always been an active participant of debates.i have participated in 3 model un conferences out of which i was awarded with the best delegate award in two. i was also one of the two students to be selected from my school to participate in the english speaking union '08.moreover, i've taken part in parliamentary style debates too.therefore i believe i can communicate effectively in public and language will not be a barrier in my education.furthermore, i have worked as an internee at al-shifa eye hospital for a month in summers.here i learnt how to deal with patients, use the auto ref, handle files and punctuality.we also campaigned to a remote area near murree where we helped the doctors in examining the patients free of cost.another experience which taught me a lot was when me and my fellow colleagues volunteered to paint walls for the sos children's village.in addition,i worked with sungi (ngo) where a group of 5 of us had to organize an event to pay tribute to 1000 women for the nobel peace prize.

i enjoy literature, especially the works of shakespeare, tennessee williams, thomas hardy and andrew marvell.i'd be delighted to study in a challenging atmosphere where i can focus on my studies.i commit to my work and my ability to think out of the box, keenness for politics and my perception of things,i understand, gives me an edge over others.i believe in myself, and if provided with an opportunity,i'd make the university proud.

我是___,现就读于___。
